In-line filtration saves water and money at MediaWorks

We have solved Pseudomonas and corrosion issues at The MediaWorks building, a large flexible office space forming part of the regeneration of White City, utilising in-line filtration; an environmentally friendly alternative to flushing which saves both water and money.

The MediaWorks is part of a new and exciting business district which is fast becoming an alternative creative hub to Shoreditch. Following the discovery of high levels of Pseudomonas in the Chilled Water (CHW) System during routine sampling, in-line filtration was used to polish the system, retaining a stable chemistry within the circuit while eliminating water and chemical wastage.

Sectional flushing of this 231,000 ft sq space would cost in the region of £65,000 compared with £17,166 for the in-line filtration system. In addition to this significant saving, Guardian’s solution offers the following financial and environmental benefits:

  • 3-4 week lead time, vs a 6 week lead time
  • No need to waste vast volumes of water and chemicals
  • Non-disruptive to water chemistry
  • Reduced damage to pipework (flushing itself can cause corrosion)
  • Reduced risk of blockage and consequent downtime

Steven Booth, MD for Guardian Water Treatment, said: “Unlike flushing, the traditional method for dealing with biofilm, during in-line filtration all the existing water is retained in the system, which saves huge amounts of water; in this case 100,000 litres.  Additionally, the in-line filtration process preserves the existing corrosion inhibitor in the system, eliminating the need for hundreds of litres of chemicals which would otherwise have to be used to replenish the CHW system.”

Using advanced bacteria sampling, Guardian was able to identify instant microbiological trends on a weekly basis, allowing adjustments to the treatment programme to be over the duration of the treatment.

The Guardian team delivered service as part of ongoing water treatment at MediaWorks through George Birchall Services Ltd., which oversees the site’s Facilities Management.
