Championing Water Quality and Conservation

Milin Patel, Group Business Development Manager

Milin Patel is Group Business Development Manager for Marlowe Environmental Services (MES) company, Hydro-X, focussing on water quality and reuse across a range of sectors, including heat networks, data centres and hospitals. He has worked with Hydro-X on and off for the past 15 years, alongside a range of other projects in the water space. Milin is passionate about conserving water; an at-risk resource stretched by the juxtaposition of climate change vs increasingly water hungry infrastructure.

 Milin’s areas of expertise:

  • Education: Sharing his knowledge and passion for water conservation with businesses, charities, governments and schools.
  • Water system technologies: In particular, solutions that ensure water quality, while facilitating water saving, such as process water recycling and real-time condition monitoring.
  • Business development: Working with clients to develop beneficial and sustainable water-based  solutions across a number of sectors.

A seasoned water consultant with over two decades of experience, Milin has advised heads of state on water conservation, and worked on major data centre and district heating schemes around the world.

“It’s an exciting time to be working in this field,” said Milin, “particularly for MES which in the UK is at the forefront of both technology and expertise when it comes to ensuring water quality without wastage in key growth industries. Hydro-X has worked in the data centre and district energy space for years, and understands the challenges of balancing water quality and sustainability.

Every system and site is different, so it’s crucial that approaches are tailored. MES has an unrivalled understanding, working with a wide range of clients, so can design, implement and maintain the water part of essential projects and contracts that will stand the test of time.

To drive the industry forward we need enhanced treatment programmes and to think outside the box in terms of cost analysis. Getting water systems right from the outset will improve outcomes, reduce energy wastage and crucially, prevent water wastage. The latest cooling tower water reuse systems, for example, can reuse up to 70% if process of water without compromising on quality, promising a swift return on investment.

Real time condition monitoring is also a game changer in closed systems. Preventing ‘routine’ flushing, while ensuring potentially corrosive conditions are dealt with before major problems occur, again saving building owners and FMs money long-term.”

Milin’s mission to educate when it comes to understanding the value of water and how best to use and save it, has seen him travel the world, appear on television, work with universities, and impart advice to governments and some of the largest global corporations.

“My background is most definitely technical, I have studied Environmental Water Science and have extensive engineering expertise around all types of commercial water systems. I also have a solid foundation in business development, with over 20 years’ experience in water treatment, hygiene and technology.

This grounding, combined with my passion and drive, has led me on an exciting and rewarding career, which is rooted in the very real purpose of helping humans navigate the challenges of how we engage and use water, now and in the future. I’m excited to be on this journey with MES, a company which shares my passion and delivers best-in-class solutions for some of the most important and water intensive projects of our time.”
