As a major hospital site, the client is responsible for ensuring the highest level of fire safety compliance across extensive facilities. The project demonstrates our ability to deliver large-scale fire safety services in highly complex and sensitive environments. This Case Study demonstrates how Marlowe Environmental Services ensured fire safety through thorough fire damper testing services.

Challenge

Regular fire damper testing had not been completed at the site for a few years. This posed both safety and compliance risks. With over 2,300 dampers across the hospital, a lack of regular testing and remedial work meant undetected faults could compromise the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.

Additionally, access posed a unique challenge throughout the project. Due to the nature of the healthcare environment, detailed planning and coordination were required to gain access to all areas without disrupting clinical operations. Additionally, drawings to locate fire dampers had to be interpreted accurately, often in fast-moving operational zones.

Solution

Our team implemented a structured approach, assigning two engineers to methodically test and review fire dampers on a building-by-building basis. This included moving systematically across different wings of the hospital, in close coordination with the client.

A key aspect of the solution was the development of a live tracker, offering the client real-time updates on damper status, including pass/fail outcomes and reasons for failures. This data-centric approach provided transparency and accountability while supporting informed decision-making for ongoing remedials.

Although the fire damper testing programme followed Marlowe Environmental Service’s standard processes, the scale and setting made this a uniquely demanding assignment. Collaboration with the hospital’s team was instrumental in maintaining momentum and overcoming access and logistical issues.

  • After completion in January 2025, Marlowe Environmental Services successfully tested over 2,300 fire dampers and began remedial works in key areas across the site. The introduction of live data tracking allowed the client to closely monitor compliance and plan future maintenance more effectively.
