Safe and Sustainable Water Disinfection for a National Visitor Attraction

Background

A renowned UK tourist destination, celebrated for its immersive horticultural displays and eco-conscious design required a water disinfection solution for a new, large-scale greenhouse complex. With hot and cold zones and a 1-million-litre lagoon harvesting rainwater for irrigation, safety and sustainability were paramount.

The site cultivates edible produce, including tomatoes, peppers, and courgettes, used in its restaurants and food retail offerings. As such, the water treatment system had to meet the highest standards of plant safety and public health.

The Challenge

Although chlorine dioxide was used elsewhere on-site, it was deemed unsuitable for use in the lagoon and rain-fed greenhouse system. The lead horticulturalist flagged potential risks of chemical absorption in edible crops, prompting a need for a gentler, safer alternative without compromising on disinfection efficacy.

The Solution

After detailed consultation, Genox was selected for its low-risk, automated generation of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) using only salt, water, and electricity. This makes Genox a sustainable and safe option for environments where chemical sensitivity is non-negotiable.

Why Genox Was the Right Fit:

• Safe for edible plants – meets stringent crop safety concerns

• Chemical-free logistics – no drum storage, no manual handling

• Rainwater compatible – ideal for green infrastructure

• Continuous performance – supports consistent microbial control

Outcome & Impact

  • Seamlessly integrated into the rain-fed irrigation system
  • Fully aligned with the attraction’s sustainability commitments
  • A UK-first for Genox in the horticulture sector, setting a benchmark for safe, scalable water disinfection in eco-conscious environments
  • Strong stakeholder satisfaction from both horticultural and operational teams
