WCSEE Hybrid™ Biological Treatment

SAF Meets MBBR in WCSEE Hybrid™

The patented WCSEE Hybrid™ biological treatment system is a submerged moving-bed fixed-film reactor that integrates fixed-film and suspended-growth principles in a true hybrid of SAF and MBBR technologies.

Its slow-moving, neutrally buoyant media circulates within a controlled rotational flow biozone, enabling continuous internal recirculation, multiple treatment passes and full utilisation of the tank volume to maximise biological contact. This approach ensures stable, high-performance nutrient removal and enhanced effluent quality.

Flexible Hybrid-16 units are scalable to accommodate population growth

Onsite sludge tank repurposed with custom Hybrid cells

Custom specification design can overcome challenging site access such as narrow lanes and overhead cables

Units can be redeployed if existing site installation becomes redundant before end-of-life

The HiPAF integral system (featuring Hybrid™ biozone) preserves unobstructed views, making it an ideal solution for rural locations that lack access to mains drainage.

Why choose WCSEE Hybrid™ over traditional biological systems?

  • True SAF-MBBR hybrid combines fixed-film stability with suspended growth flexibility for robust, resilient treatment.
  • Rotational flow biozone continuous multi-pass treatment and full tank volume utilisation for enhanced effluent polishing.
  • Low-shear operation supports stable biofilm growth while reducing media abrasion and microplastic generation, keeping flocs intact for better settlement.
  • Energy efficient integrated energy-saving timers; no high-energy media scour required.
  • Modular off-site construction option of installation on a flat gravel bed foundation, significantly reducing civil works.
  • Compact footprint up to 30% smaller than comparable SAF and MBBR systems, depending on configuration and site requirements.

Product Specification

  • Rotational multi-pass flow: Continuous circulation generates multiple passes over the media, improving effluent polishing without increasing tank size or media load.
  • Continuous internal recirculation: Effluent repeatedly cycles through the biozone, sustaining performance under variable and diurnal loads.
  • Neutrally buoyant media (310): Supports strong biofilm attachment while maintaining active biomass in suspension. Minimises sludge buildup and reduces maintenance requirements. (Typical media life: 20 years).
  • Low-shear operating Environment: Reduces turbulence and abrasion, protecting media, reducing microplastics risk and extending service life.
  • Enhanced nutrient removal: Extended contact time promotes stable biofilm development and improved nitrogen and nutrient reduction. Configurable with anoxic zones to meet regulatory targets.

Effluent quality

The WCSEE Hybrid™ system consistently meets stringent effluent standards, with configurable nutrient removal for site-specific requirements:

  • Ammonia: <0.4 mg/L
  • Phosphorus (P): optional add-on (chemical dosing) for site-specific removal
  • Total Nitrogen (TN): configurable with anoxic zones
  • BOD & COD: meets high treatment standards for biochemical oxygen demand and soluble chemical oxygen demand

Effluent Quality Targets

  • Ammonia: <0.4 mg/L
  • Phosphorus: Optional add-on for P removal
  • Total Nitrogen: Configurable with anoxic conditions
  • BOD/COD: Meets high treatment standards (site-specific design and commissioning)
  • Optimised reactor use
  • Full tank volume utilisation: Lower media fill combined with continuous recirculation optimises hydraulic efficiency, maximises capacity and ensures consistent treatment under variable loading.
  • Energy savings with built-in energy-saving timers: Can achieve up to 65% reduction in blower energy compared to traditional systems (site-specific).
  • Variable speed drive blowers: Deliver 50–100% of design requirements, ensuring operational flexibility.
  • No mechanical or electrical moving parts in cells: Reduces complexity, lowers failure risk and simplifies O&M planning.
  • No tank desludging or media removal: Minimises downtime and simplifies inspections and component replacement.
  • Consistent performance: Continuous recirculation reduces risk of untreated pockets.
  • Compact smaller footprint: – typically up to 30% smaller than comparable SAF and MBBR technologies, subject to configuration and site requirements.
  • Modular & scalable: Off-site construction enables quick installation, flexible deployment and redeployment if requirements change.
  • Reduced civil works – can be installed on a flat gravel bed foundation, minimizing civil construction needs.
  • Adaptable vessel options: Steel, concrete or GRP containment. Suitable for above- or below-ground installations.
  • Factory-fitted control kiosks: Include blowers, panels and optional telemetry.
  • UK manufactured: High-quality, quality-controlled production with locally sourced components.
  • Customisable Integration: Optimised for new or existing vessels of any shape or size.
  • Reduced media wear & microplastics risk: Low-shear operation protects media and the environment.
  • Optimised resource use: Lower media fill and hydraulic efficiency reduce material and energy consumption.
